Alaska Resource Education is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate students about Alaska’s natural resources. To achieve our mission, ARE distributes Alaska Resource Kits to Alaska teachers that contain a State of Alaska standards-based set of lessons as well as the coveted rock and minerals kit. ARE conducts training sessions on our resource curriculum that allows educators throughout Alaska to learn more about Alaska’s resources, and to educate students on the importance of natural resources and the role they play in their everyday lives.


Position Description

The STEM Educator reports to the Education Program Manager and is an integral part of the organization. This is a full-time position located in Anchorage, Alaska, with travel to rural communities across the state. The specialist will be responsible for K-8 classroom visits presenting ARE’s statewide, standards-based natural resource curriculum, managing resource kit inventory and distribution, and assisting the Program Manager with teacher trainings and youth programs.  


Scope of Position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Provide classroom presentations of ARE’s curriculum across the state

  • Maintain resource kit inventory and distribution

  • Assist in maintaining a social media presence

  • Assist Program Manager with teacher trainings and youth programs

  • Manage data collection of statewide impact


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years working in Alaska and familiar with Alaska’s natural resources.

  • Belief in ARE’s mission to provide education about Alaska’s natural resources to Alaska’s teachers and students.

  • Willingness to travel throughout the State of Alaska; work a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings.

  • Demonstrated strong communication and organization skills including classroom management.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations and geographic areas.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching/education experience

  • Alaska teaching experience

  • Rural Alaska travel experience

  • Experience in resource education or management

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Biology, Education, or related field
