ARE Rockstars

Rockstars is an immersive experience that introduces students to the full spectrum of Alaska’s mining industry including geology, engineering, technology, and heavy equipment operations in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Designed to go beyond basic exposure, the program helps students understand how natural resources are discovered, developed, and responsibly managed.

Throughout the program, students participate in site tours that provide a behind-the-scenes look at real mining operations and support facilities, giving them a clear picture of how the industry functions day to day. Guest speakers from across the sector including geologists, engineers, equipment operators, environmental specialists, and safety professionals share their career journeys and offer insight into the wide range of opportunities available.

Rockstars places a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Students engage in interactive activities and simulations that mirror real-world processes such as mineral exploration, core sampling, mine planning, and resource development. Through team-based challenges and scenario-based games, they experience the decision-making, problem-solving, and collaboration required in modern mining operations.

In addition to technical knowledge, the program highlights the importance of safety, environmental stewardship, and innovation within the industry. Students gain a deeper appreciation for how mining intersects with communities, economies, and sustainability efforts across Alaska. By the end of the program, participants leave with a stronger understanding of mining and geology, increased confidence in their skills, and a clearer vision of potential career pathways from skilled trades and technical roles to science, technology, engineering, and environmental fields.
